Introduction:
Srikanteshwara Temple, Nanjangud: The Southern Kashi
The Srikanteshwara Temple, also known as Nanjundeshwara Temple, is a revered Hindu shrine located in Nanjangud, Karnataka, on the banks of the River Kapila. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Srikanteshwara or Nanjundeshwara (the one who drank poison), the temple is often called the "Kashi of the South" due to its spiritual significance.
Boasting Dravidian-style architecture, the temple features intricately carved gopurams (tower gateways), large courtyards, and centuries-old stone pillars. It is one of the largest temples in Karnataka and attracts thousands of devotees, especially during festivals like Dodda Jatre and Mahashivaratri. The temple is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of rich history and faith, associated with various legends and patronized by rulers like Tipu Sultan and the Wodeyars of Mysore.
