Vaikom Sree Mahadeva Temple

Introduction:

The Vaikom Sree Mahadeva Temple, located in Vaikom, Kottayam district of Kerala, India, is one of the oldest and most revered temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Often referred to as the "Kashi of the South," the temple holds immense spiritual significance and is a prominent pilgrimage site in South India.

Historical and Mythological Significance

Believed to be over 1,500 years old, the temple's origins are steeped in legend. According to mythology, the demon Khara received three Shiva Lingams from Lord Shiva after intense penance. He placed them in Vaikom, Ettumanoor, and Kaduthuruthy. These three temples are considered highly auspicious, and it's believed that visiting all three before noon fulfills devotees' wishes.

The temple is also associated with the sage Vyaghrapada, who performed penance here. On the day of Vrichika Ashtami, Lord Shiva and Parvati appeared before him, leading to the annual celebration of Vaikathashtami.

Architectural Features

The temple showcases traditional Kerala architecture. The sanctum sanctorum (Sreekovil) is unique with its oval shape, a rarity among Kerala temples. The temple complex spans approximately eight acres, featuring a copper-covered Sreekovil and intricate wood and stone work in the Mukha Mandapa.
