The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is a renowned Hindu shrine located in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala, India. Dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, a fierce form of the divine feminine (Devi), the temple is affectionately known as the “Sabarimala of Women” due to its immense female following and the iconic Attukal Pongala festival, which has earned a place in the Guinness World Records for being the largest gathering of women for a religious activity.

Major Festival – Attukal Pongala:

• Celebrated annually in February–March, Attukal Pongala is a 10-day festival culminating in a mass offering of Pongala (a sweet dish made of rice, jaggery, and coconut) by women devotees.

• Women from across Kerala and beyond gather to cook the offering in earthen pots on makeshift hearths lining roads stretching up to several kilometers from the temple.

Cultural & Spiritual Importance:

• The temple is deeply linked with the legend of Kannaki, the heroine of the Tamil epic Silappathikaram, who is believed to have passed through Attukal on her way to Kodungallur.
